Characteristics

  • Geography. Atlanta is situated in northwestern Georgia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains a few miles south of the Chattahoochee River at an altitude of a bit over 1000 feet above sea level.
  • Economy. Atlanta has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for many Fortune 500 companies. Mean 1999 household income was about $37,000. Nevertheless, in the city itself 21% of the families lived below the poverty level in 1999.
  • Population. In the past two decades, the region has experienced phenomenal growth, 45% in the 1990s alone. The city proper showed moderate growth over the same period, and has now about 416,000 inhabitants with a population density of 3,160 persons/mi2.
  • Urban Forest. Atlanta is in USDA Hardiness Zone 7. Overall tree cover was recently found to be about 36.7%. More than 12,000 trees were planted downtown in preparation for the 2000 Olympics. Tree maintenance is the responsibility of the City of Atlanta's Bureau of Parks, which also plants new trees with the help of the volunteer organization Trees Atlanta.
