Characteristics

  • Geography. Baltimore lies in north central Maryland, at the head of the Patapsco river estuary on the northwest edge of Chesapeake Bay. It is at sea level.
  • Economy. Baltimore's traditional strengths--its harbor and its manufacturing sector--have been revitalized over the last 2 decades, restoring much of its economic health. Mean 1999 household income was about $30,000, with 18.8% of families living below the poverty level.
  • Population. Population was 651,154 in the 2000 Census, a drop of 12% since 1990. Population density is 8,059 persons/mi2.
  • Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 7. In 1995 2.6 million trees were estimated to lie within city limits. Tree cover was recently found to be about 25.2%. Tree planting maintenance is primarily the responsibility of the City of Baltimore's Bureau of Recreation and Parks.
