Characteristics
- Geography. Baltimore lies in north central Maryland, at the head of the Patapsco river estuary on the northwest edge of Chesapeake Bay. It is at sea level.
- Economy. Baltimore's traditional strengths--its harbor and its manufacturing sector--have been revitalized over the last 2 decades, restoring much of its economic health. Mean 1999 household income was about $30,000, with 18.8% of families living below the poverty level.
- Population. Population was 651,154 in the 2000 Census, a drop of 12% since 1990. Population density is 8,059 persons/mi2.
- Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 7. In 1995 2.6 million trees were
estimated to lie within city limits. Tree cover was recently found to be about 25.2%.
Tree planting maintenance is primarily the responsibility of the City of
Baltimore's
Bureau
of Recreation and Parks.

- Study domain. All the area within city limits.
- Plot layout. A total of 202 random plots were inventoried, each a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
- Data collection. Forest Service personnel collected field data in 1999.
- Support. The USDA Forest Service funded the data collection, and its Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
