Characteristics
- Geography. Like Baltimore and New York, Boston lies at the head of a natural port formed where the Charles River meets the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern shore of Massachusetts.
- Economy. Four primary industries currently provide much of the impetus for economic growth: financial services, health, high technology, and higher education. In 1999, mean household income was $39,629, and 15.3% of families lived below the poverty threshold.
- Population. Population was 589,1414 in the 2000 Census, a rise of 2.6% since 1990. Population density is 12,166 persons/mi2.
- Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 5. In 1995 1.8 million trees were estimated
to lie within city limits. Tree cover was recently found to be about 22.3%. Tree
planting and maintenance is carried out by Boston's
Parks and
Recreation Department.
