Characteristics

  • Geography. Calgary sits on the junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers on the east flank of the Canadian Rockies in the province of Alberta. It is located 3,740 feet above sea level.
  • Economy. Originally based on cattle, the economy of Calgary now rides on the fortunes of oil. It leads Canada in both personal income and personal income growth.
  • Population. The City had 860,000 inhabitants in the 2000 Civic Census, a growth of 152,000 (21%) since 1990. Population density is 3,089 persons/mi2.
  • Urban Forest. Canadian Forest Service Hardiness Zone 3a. Tree cover was recently found to be about 7.2%. Because of the cold, poplars have been the traditional backbone of Calgary's urban forest. Tree planting and maintenance are the responsibility of the City of Calgary Parks, Urban Forestry section.

  • Study domain. All the area within city limits.
  • Plot layout. A total of 350 random plots were inventoried, each of which was a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
  • Data collection. City of Calgary personnel collected field data in 1998.
  • Support. The City of Calgary funded the data collection, and its Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
