Characteristics
- Geography. Jersey City lies on a peninsula between the Hudson and Hackensack rivers in northeastern New Jersey.
- Economy. Though Jersey City originally rose as a center of industry and as cargo hub, now it is a better known as an office and retail center, and is sometimes called "Wall Street West." Mean household income in 1999 was $37,862, and 16.4% of families lived below poverty level.
- Population. Population was 240,055 in the 2000 Census, a rise of 5% since 1990. Population density is 12,872 persons/mi2.
- Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 6. Tree cover was recently found to be
about 11.5%. Tree planting and maintenance is the responsibility of Jersey City's Department of Public Works/Parks and Forestry.
