Characteristics
- Geography. New York City is located on the Eastern Atlantic coast of the United States, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The island of Manhattan is largely a protrusion of granite, rising a few hundred feet above sea level.
- Economy. The financial, insurance, and real estate sector accounts for approximately 13 percent of the City's workforce but 30 percent of annual earnings, primarily wages and salaries. The City enjoyed good growth throughout the 1990s. Mean household income in 1999 was $38,293, while 18.5% of households lived below the poverty level.
- Population. Population was 8,008,278 in the 2000 Census, a rise of 9% since 1990. Population density was 25,920 persons/mi2.
- Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 6. Tree cover was recently found to be
about 20.9%. Tree maintenance is the responsibility of the City of New York, Parks and Recreation department. That department also plants street trees, along with the aid of the volunteer organization Trees New York.

- Study domain. All the area within city limits.
- Plot layout. A total of 206 random plots were inventoried, each of which was a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
- Data collection. Personnel of
ACRT, a natural resource consulting firm based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, collected field data in 1996.
- Support. The National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council and the Forest Service funded the data collection, and the Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
