Characteristics

  • Geography. The city of Philadelphia is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania, at the junction of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, approximately 100 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Its elevation is about 45 feet above sea level.
  • Economy. Once based on manufacturing, Philadelphia's economy has shifted toward services, which today account for 2 of every 5 jobs. It did reasonably well throughout the 1990s, showing good growth in population, income, and jobs, though less than the national average. In 1999, mean income was $30,746, and 18.4% of families lived below the poverty level.
  • Population. Population was 1,517,550 in the 2000 Census, a drop of 4% since 1990. Population density is 11,229 persons/mi2.
  • Urban Forest. Tree cover was recently determined to be 15.7% in the City of Philadelphia. USDA Hardiness Zone 6. Jurisdiction for tree planting and maintenance lies in the hands of the City of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park Commission.

  • Study domain. All the area within city limits.
  • Plot layout. A total of 210 random plots were inventoried, each of which was a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
  • Data collection. Personnel of ACRT, a natural resource consulting firm based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, collected field data in 1996.
  • Support. The National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council and the Forest Service funded data collection, and the USDA Forest Service Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
