Characteristics
- Geography. The City of Syracuse is located in Western New York State on a rise at the southern end of Onondaga Lake, some 30 miles south of Lake Ontario. City altitude ranges from 364 to 681 feet.
- Economy. A shift from manufacturing to services has occurred in the City of Syracuse as in many other northeast metropolitan centers. Moderate growth in the 1990s has supported a strong revitalization campaign. Mean household income in 1999 was $25,000, with 21.7% of families living below the poverty level.
- Population. Population in 2000 was 147,306, a drop of 10% from 1990. Population density is 5,890 persons/ mile2.
- Urban Forest. Tree cover was recently computed at 24.4%, and the number of
street trees was placed at 34,165. USDA Hardiness Zone 5. Planting and maintenance
is carried out by the Department of Public Works,

- Study domain. All the area within city limits.
- Plot layout. A total of 200 random plots were inventoried, each of which was a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
- Data collection. Forest Service personnel collected field data in 1999.
- Support. The USDA Forest Service funded the data collection, and its Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
