Characteristics
- Geography. Toronto lies an average of 367 feet above sea level on the northwest shore of Ontario Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was founded at the juncture of three important trade routes and the Toronto Passage, a shortcut up the Humber River to the upper Great Lakes and northern and western Canada.
- Economy. Toronto's industries include slaughtering and meatpacking, printing and publishing, and the manufacture of aircraft, farm implements, electrical machinery, and metal products. The city has the country's leading service sector and attracts a growing amount of high-tech businesses. It is also a major tourist center.
- Population. In 2001, the population was 2,481,494, a rise of 4% since 1996. Population density was 1,020 persons/mi2.
- Urban Forest. USDA Hardiness Zone 6 equivalent. Tree cover was recently
computed at 20.5%. Tree planting and maintenance lies under the supervision of the
City of Toronto, Division of
Parks and Recreation.

- Study domain. All the area within city limits.
- Plot layout. A total of 211 random plots were inventoried, each of which was a circle with an area of 0.1 acre.
- Data collection. University of Toronto personnel collected field data in 2000.
- Support. The University of Toronto funded the data collection, and the Research Unit in Syracuse NY analyzed the results.
